White embossing: Spring into Summer. The white cow parsley heads were embossed at the start, before applying any ink or coloured pencil. Umbel-like flower shapes were then created by working round white areas with colour, deepening from mid-green to a more shadowy mix where necessary. Tiny 0.03 ink dots were added later to give more texture.

Once you have decided where to start and which areas need to be embossed, inked or approached more cautiously with coloured pencil, you will be ready to build up your image. Keep looking at your source image, test out new ideas and colours before committing yourself, and if they work, proceed with confidence!

THE NEXT STEP

The next chapter will explore common features of landscape and how to depict them using all the techniques at your disposal. You can then put them to immediate use and also contribute some of your own inventions.
